Volkswagen Reinforces Its Sales Success In UK Market•Volkswagen sales remain strong despite market slowdown

•Golf and Polo are Volkswagen's two top-sellers in the UK

•Brand's March market share grew to 8.37% – up by 1.30%

Milton Keynes Volkswagen is reflecting on a strong first quarter of new car sales as the brand consolidates its second position in the highly competitive UK market. Official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show Volkswagen to be outperforming both the market, and its key competitors, so far this year.

The key new car sales month of March saw two of Volkswagen's perennial favourites make it into the top ten sales list with the much-loved Golf ranked third (11,072 sales) and the capacious Polo supermini eighth (8,614 sales). Volkswagen's two biggest sellers in the UK have also secured top ten placings in new car registrations year to date (end of March 2019), with the Golf again third (17,412 sales) and the Polo seventh (13,089).

Overall, Volkswagen took a creditable 8.37% share of the UK market in March, with total sales of 38,335 cars last month. That's up 1.30% on the same month in 2018, and is a particularly strong performance in the context of a UK new car market down 3.38% last month.

Similarly, for the first quarter of 2019, Volkswagen's UK sales figures are correspondingly positive. Year-to-date here the brand has sold 59,519 cars for a market share of 8.49% – that's up 3.59% on the same period in 2018 in a UK market that, as a whole, is 2.43% down in the first three months of the year.

These strong and consistent sales successes cement Volkswagen's position in second spot in the UK market, as the brand also grows its share of the retail sector – up by a full 1.2% in the first three months of the year.

Patrick McGillycuddy is Head of Sales for Volkswagen in the UK. He said: 'While it's pleasing for us to see Golf and Polo performing so well and, clearly, appealing to UK buyers in their tens of thousands, the breadth of Volkswagen's model range is also playing a big part in this sales success.
