Volkswagen Amarok Picks Up Inaugural What Car? Pick-Up Of The Year Award

The Volkswagen Amarok is kicking off 2019 in style, by picking up What Car?'s inaugural Pick-Up of the Year Award. The popular pick-up's combination of excellent on- and off-road capabilities secured it the sought-after trophy.

The latest iteration of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' Amarok has proved popular with fleets and retail buyers alike since it was launched in January 2017, thanks to its powerful and torquey 3.0-litre V6 engine, robust off-road credentials and premium position and interior. Three versions of the engine are currently on offer with 163, 204 or 258 PS. A choice of selectable and permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive systems are available, as well as six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes. Trendline, Highline or a special edition Aventura trim levels are available.

What Car?'s pick of the pick-up bunch is the Trendline 204 PS with automatic gearbox, priced at £27,450 (basic RRP excl VAT). Commenting on the Amarok, Editor of What Car?, Steve Huntingford, said: 'If you want a pick-up that can put in a hard shift during the week then become family transport at the weekend, then look no further than the Volkswagen Amarok. Modern pick-ups are expected to do it all, and this one truly does.'

Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Carl zu Dohna, was presented the award at a ceremony in London tonight. He added: 'The Amarok has been a big hit since it was relaunched in 2017, and it's maintained its popularity among both long-standing fans as well as those new to the pick-up market. This is a booming sector and we're delighted that a publication with as much clout as What Car? has recognised the Amarok's qualities and appeal.'

Just under 3,500 Amaroks found homes in the UK in 2018, a 17 per cent increase on 2017's sales.
